![]() It’s also worth noting that remote play will work across the Internet too, but the results will depend heavily on the Internet connection speeds at both locations. If the PS4 doesn’t have the hardware to handle 1080p, then we’ll probably be stuck with 720p until the PS4.5 comes out. Obviously, if you run into sound issues or choppy graphics, you can change these setting each time you run remote play.Ĭurrently, remote play does not support 1080p or higher resolutions and may or may not in the future. If you are streaming PS4 games over your home network and everything is gigabit, then you should be fine changing the resolution to 720p and the frame rate to High. I suggest clicking on settings first to configure the resolution and frame rate.īy default, the resolution is set to 540p and the frame rate is set to Standard. Once you have connected your controller, you can either click on Start or Settings. The first screen that will popup tells you to connect a DualShock 4 controller to your computer via USB. Once completed, run the PS4 Remote Play program from your desktop. The installation is straight-forward and doesn’t require you to choose any settings, etc. Once your system is up-to-date, you can now install the Remote Play software on your Windows or Mac machine. If an update is available, it will automatically be downloaded and installed. ![]() ![]() Now scroll down until you see System Software Update and press X on the controller. To update the system software on your PS4, press up on the D-Pad and then over to the right until Settings is highlighted. Obviously, the first step is to turn on your PS4 and make sure you have installed the latest system software, which should be 3.50 as of the time of this writing. For Macs, it’s either OS X Yosemite or El Capitan. You should also know that remote play doesn’t work with Windows 7, only Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. The setup procedure was pretty much identical on the Mac. It would be great to be able to stream the PS5 to laptops and desktops, but between mobile and the PS4, there are plenty of great options for streaming the PS5 anywhere in your house.I’ll first quickly go over how to setup remote play on a Windows PC and then talk about the performance, troubleshooting, etc. PS5 streaming is extremely pixelated and laggy. The PC app won't even stream the base PS4 in 1080p, only 720p. I've been testing it on both the PS5 and the PS4 and every game is a stuttering mess. I'm not sure why the desktop app is so much worse than these other apps. It's a bit trickier and you need to configure your router in a certain way, but with the app you can stream your PS5 anywhere. The app also offers over-the-internet streaming. Without ever disconnecting my phone from the Razer Kishi, I can use Xbox Game Pass, Stadia, Steam Link, Geforce NOW, and PSPLAY. Though it is a paid app ($5.99 USD), it will allow you to use any controller and it offers an even more stable stream. I have phone mounts for Stadia and Steelseries controllers, as well as the Razer Kishi, but I'm not keen on getting yet another phone controller mount and switching controllers when I play games on different platforms. Unlike those streaming apps, the PlayStation app only works with a Dualshock 4 controller. I'm a big fan of playing games on mobile, and the PS Remote Play app works just as good as Game Pass and Stadia. What's even more impressive is using remote play on a mobile device. If it burns out, I would definitely consider replacing it with another used PS4. I intend to keep the PS4 in my office as my remote PS5 for this entire console generation. ![]() With the Remote Play app, I essentially have two PS5s. When Sony revealed that the PS5 would be backwards compatible with practically the entire PS4 library, I expected my PS4 would end up collecting dust or traded into Gamestop for a few bucks. Remote Play has kept my PS4 useless and relevant for much longer than I expected it to. I've been playing Demon's Souls on my PS4 all week and have not had one moment of input lag or stuttering, and have only seen momentary pixelation one time. Even over WiFi, the stream is absolutely flawless. My PS5 is on a 5 GHz wifi connection in my living room while my PS4 is on a wired connection one floor up and on the opposite side of my house. That's not the case at all with the PS5 streaming app. RELATED: Cyberpunk 2077 On Stadia Is Actually Pretty Good, So Long As You're Pulling 200MB/s Down ![]()
